1. Introduction

Folio ("we", "us", or "our") is a book tracking app for households. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect when you use Folio, how we use it, and the choices you have.

By creating an account, you agree to the practices described in this policy.

2. Information we collect

Information you provide directly

  • Account information — your display name and email address when you sign up. If you use Apple Sign-In, Apple provides your email address (or a relay address if you choose to hide your email).
  • Profile information — your display name and avatar (either a default image or one you upload from your photo library).
  • Household information — your household's name and the members you invite to join it.
  • Book and library data — books you add to your library, including reading status, ownership status, star ratings, personal notes, acquisition notes, tags, and the physical location of books in your home (e.g. "Bedroom shelf").
  • Lists — named collections of books you create, which may be shared with your household.
  • Recommendations — books you recommend to household members, including any notes you attach.

Information collected automatically

  • Usage data — pages visited, features used, and interactions within the app.
  • Crash and diagnostic data — if the app crashes or encounters an error, we collect technical information including device model, operating system version, and a stack trace. This is handled by Sentry (see Section 5).
  • Device and connection information — device type, operating system version, and IP address.

Information from third parties

  • Google Books API — when you scan a barcode or search for a book, we fetch metadata including title, author, cover image, publisher, publication year, genre, and ISBN. This data is stored in our database and is not edited after it is saved.
  • Apple Sign-In — if you choose Apple Sign-In, Apple provides your name and email address (or a relay address) to create your account.

3. How we use your information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Create and manage your account and household
  • Store and display your personal library, reading history, and book data
  • Enable household sharing features — book collections, shared lists, and recommendations between members
  • Identify and fix bugs and crashes in the app (via Sentry)
  • Improve the reliability and performance of Folio
  • Respond to support requests

We do not use your data to serve advertising. We do not sell your personal information to third parties.

4. Household data sharing

Folio is designed for shared use within a household. If you are part of a household with other members, please be aware that:

  • All book data is visible to all household members. This includes your reading status, star ratings, personal notes, tags, and the physical location of books.
  • Your household members can see your full library activity — there are no private fields within a household.
  • Books you add on behalf of a household member are attributed to them within the household view.
  • Recommendations you send to a household member, including any notes, are visible to the sender and recipient.

If you do not wish to share particular information with your household, we recommend not entering it into the app.

5. Third-party services

Folio uses the following third-party services. Each has its own privacy policy.

Supabase — our database and authentication provider. Your account credentials, library data, and all content you enter into Folio is stored on Supabase infrastructure.

6. Data retention

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, your profile, library entries, lists, tags, locations, and activity history will be permanently deleted. Some data may remain in backups for a short period before being purged.

7. Your rights and choices

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you
  • Correct inaccurate information
  • Delete your account and personal data
  • Export your data

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at the address in Section 10. You can also delete your account directly within the app via Profile & Settings → Account → Delete account.

8. Children's privacy

Folio is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you within the app or by email before the changes take effect. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.
